Model of Villaviciosa: the Puebla Maliayo in bronze
Xuan Pedrayes Obaya.
Villaviciosa, in the heart of Asturias, has since this year a large urban model made by our foundry. It is a large format bronze representation (2×3.2 meters) that recreates in great detail the old Puebla Maliayo of the 18th century. This model of Villaviciosa, weighing approximately 500kg, is integrated into the renovated La Manzanera square as a new point of historical, cultural and tourist interest.
This is the third model of cities that we have made in the last two years, within an ambitious project of recovery of urban heritage through bronze sculptures of great precision. As on other occasions, the process began with models of the Puebla that through the lost wax casting of each building separately, and then welded, polished and adjusted by hand with great care to achieve this homogeneous result and faithful to the original layout.
The basis of this urban model of Villaviciosa was the carving study of the architect Xuan Pedrayes, whose doctoral thesis on the development of the town was essential to faithfully reproduce walls, churches, palaces, convents and even granaries. In addition to the patina process, strategic felling was carried out to avoid the accumulation of water in key points, ensuring its conservation outdoors.
The installation, carried out in record time, included a support structure to ensure maximum safety and durability. The model is thus integrated into the environment in a solid and stable way, ready to withstand the passage of time and inclement weather.
This model of Villaviciosa is a new example of commitment to artistic and technical excellence in the realization of urban models in bronze, reinforcing for our foundry to be an international reference in large format sculptural casting.
